Why Wounds Leave Scars?
The muscles in your face move more than almost any other muscle in the body. Therefore, when you get a cut or other injury to your face, it is harder to stop movement in the area, allowing it to heal correctly. Therefore, constant tugging and twisting of the wound causing it to deepen and become more noticeable. Unfortunately, while you can hide scars on your knees by wearing long pants or scars on your arms by wearing long sleeves, it is much harder to hide scars on your face.
Can BOTOX Help Lessen Scarring?
A team of doctors at Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine did a double-blind study to discover if BOTOX could help with scarring. A peer-reviewed article published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the American Society of Plastic Journals found that BOTOX was very effective at helping stop scarring.
This study included 14 patients. Most were being treated for congenital disabilities. The doctors sewed up the wounds but only put BOTOX in half the wound and a placebo in the other half the wound.
The team discovered that where they put the BOTOX healed much smoother than where it was not used. This would be an expected outcome because there is less tension on the wound, allowing it to heal in its natural position.
Can BOTOX Help With Wound Healing?
In a separate study published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings, a team of researchers from the University of Buffalo in New York found that BOTOX effectively reduced the development of wounds.
The team gave some patients who were being treated for surgical or cancer wounds a solution of saline or BOTOX. Then, plastic surgeons who were not involved with the injections were asked to evaluate how the injuries were healing on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the best. The doctors rated those receiving BOTOX 8.9 while rating those not receiving BOTOX 7.1.
It works because BOTOX weakens the muscles under the healing incision and prevents them from contracting, helping to reduce or eliminate scarring.
Can BOTOX Help With Wound Reconstructive Surgery?
These studies included fresh wounds, but a team from The Esthetic Clinics in Mumbai, India, found that BOTOX was effective during scarring reconstructive surgery.
This team studied 100 patients. Two weeks before their scar reconstructive surgery, they found that giving BOTOX ahead of surgery and Fractional C02 treatments following surgery helped wounds heal without scarring.
Again, it only follows that deadening the muscles around the wound site helps them heal better without constant movement.
Help! This May Cause a Scar
According to a study done in the Republic of Korea, if you have an injury that you are afraid may leave a scar, BOTOX may help lessen or eliminate scarring.
This study looked at 36 patients who had a situation that may have left a scar. The doctors discovered that those who received BOTOX immediately following medical intervention were less likely to develop long-term scars. Furthermore, they found that when a scar developed, it was much shorter and less noticeable in patients who received BOTOX than in those who did not. Interestingly, they saw no changes when looking at the scar one month after treatment but discovered a remarkable difference at six months. This study was published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the American Society of Plastic Journals.
